Actions against Gender Violence
An Underreported Problem
The lifetime prevalence of PTSD among a sample of incarcerated women. It may sound incredible that only around 23 percent of survivors report such crimes to police, but it’s true. And that number is in line with past reports: Surveys of 2014 and 2015 both put reporting rates for rape and sexual assault in the low 30s. A history of low reporting rates is one reason the Brennan Center declines to analyze trends in sexual assaults in their crime reports.
Reaching Out
The Action Against Gender Violence program was created through the lens of the leadership of Jennifer Fecu (Imani’s Safehouse) and Jessica Hall, MSW (Prison Writes). All of the women involved themselves impacted by gender violence on various levels. Their work seeks to understand factors contributing to the phenomenon of under reporting of violence against women locally here in NYC.
